Marty Sheehan : Why I Run

I started running at age 13 in a pair of high top canvas nikes. When I wore them down to nothing I graduated to a pair of Brooks Supernovas (a very popular shoe at the time). I used to run every year in the Elmira A Thon at the 10k distance.  My fondest childhood memory is running a 10k in Corning, New York and having one of my childhood heroes Henry Rono drape a medal around my neck for winning my age group in front of my Mom. For me guys like Rono and Alberto Salazar were like rock stars. I later ran on my high school cross country team and at Saint Bonaventure's Divison II cross country team under  Terry Stanley where we ran 10ks for races and logged about 100 miles a week.

For me running isn't something I have to schedule or make sure I do. It's really a part of my lifestyle and doing a morning run is like brushing my teeth in the morning.  I look at running as more of a gift that God gave me because I have two healthy legs and I'm thankful every time I finish a run. I even named my English Bulldog Prefontaine because I try to go all out in every race. To me there's nothing more exciting than seeing my times go down as a result of the hard work I put in at the track on Wednesdays with the Palm Beach Road Runners running with guys like Steve and Benny that are a great deal faster than me and push me way past my limit.  I'm hoping to run a 3:30 marathon, a 1:30 half marathon and break 20 minutes for the 5k by the end of this year.

I hope you will all lend moral support as I run the New York City Marathon this year for MS. I am planning on covering the hilly course in 3:30. I'm sure I'll see everyone out there on my Saturday long runs.

I will be the one with a smile on my face!
